anael--from arcane fires cd {paragon records}
this is my first encounter with this gloomy grim blackend doom band from germany.this is a band that does not appear to be satisified with staying to just one musical genre. their are touches of more straight forward harsh black metal.and in the next track you might have your energy drained away by the most depressing blackend/doom metal to be heard in some time.their are even some touches of the ambient scene being thrown in.this is a must have for all fans of dark metal such as {older} samael,arcturus,and maybe even older tiamat and rotting christ fans will appreciate this bands dark influences.

asmegin-arv cd {napalm records}
asmegin come from the cold depths of norweigan's front.bringing to the listener some of the best/well played traditional folk music fueled with more black/death brutality.the vocals vary from each song depending on their musical front.you have the beautiful female vocals mixed with the clean folkish style and of course where their is brutal black/death metal being played you have the shrieky growls. i really enjoyed how this band used some non-metal instruments such as accordian,pianos,mog.and even organs.this is a band that has to be heard to be believed.this band gives me hope that the scene is not all used up.

ayat-six years of dormant hatred cd {moribund rec.}
ayat is a band i had heard about and my interest was up for sure. well sadly it
wasn't what i expected.the bands bio doesnt lie their is the cold harshness of black metal legends beherit,dark throne but then the more traditional industrial sounds/vocals come into the mix. if your a fan of blackend industrial metal you might enjoy this more.but as for me i'm gonna stick with the more primitive/straight forward black metal.

blood stained dusk-black faith inquistion cd {moribund rec.}
this is a band that has been in the u.s underground for quite a few years but this is my first encounter.this is the bands debut {3rd full-length in all} fpr moribund rec.as with most u.s bands the band incorporates alot of traditional scandanavian influence. without being a rip-off the band quickly adds in some more melodic/atmospheric metal with clean male vocals and keyboards.the keys are actually a big help in setting the dark atmosphere that blood stained dusk were aiming for. fans of {early} dimmu borgir,or other epic styled black metal will defintly enjoy what b.s.d are releasing on black faith inquisiton!!

bloodsworn-all hyllest til satan cd {agonia records}
now this is what black metal should sound like.dirty,harsh,fast,and just plain nasty from start to finish.the norweigan horde combine a nice mix of old-school norweigan black metal,with some newer influences for a good blend of pure blackness.thin/scratchy guitars,blasting drums and a vocalist that has some of the scratchiest/raw vocals to be heard.but also uses some effects {which as most who know i hate that} but thankfully the effects are not used alot.
i recomend bloodsworn but only to those who enjoy the older/harsher side of black metal.

closer-a darker kind of salvation cd {napalm rec.}
a newer band from the mighty swedish scene has emerged.closer mix in a more modern melodic death metal feel with waves of technical guitar chords {i think some people consider it math metal} and melodic black metal atmosperes with harsher growls/clean/sratchy vocals.for fans of newer melodic black/death metal.

elliot's keep--in medias res cd {brainticket rec.}
with the first crushing heavy guitar riff elliot's keep prove the name of their game is "traditional" doom and they mean business.it's hard to find a more straight forward traditional doom band with all the sub-genres in the scene today.the music will take you back in time when bands like black sabbith,pentagram ruled the doom scene.the vocals are clean/melodic sounds but also add some darker gruff/whispery vocals to keep your attention.i would defintly recomend elliot's keep to the older fans of doom but also would recomend the newer fans/bands check em out as well for the band seems to mix both schools of doom together quite well..

hellveto--neo heresy cd {pulverised rec.}
polish legends hellveto return!! this is a band that has been in the scene for over 10 years but has always seemed to stay below the radar.dark atmosperes of black metal layered with keyboards and mid-paced guitars interluded with extremly fast {old marduk/dark funeral} blasts of hateful black metal.but to keep the listener guessing as to where hellveto will go to next their are even acoustic guitars,whispery,clean vocals.and the biggest surprise {atleast to me} is hellveto is a one-man band!! trust me if you heard this masterpiece you would have never guessed.get this now!!!

necronoclast--haven cd {moribund rec.}
the dreary/dark scottish soul returns with a new masterpiece of dreary black metal.semi raw black metal guitars with touches of more melodic acoustic's.the drums are blasts beats but quickly slow to almost a doomish feel.and finally to finish off this masterpiece of original blackness are the vocals that are mid paced growls to the more blackend screechs depending on which mood is trying to be expressed.

seraphim slaughter-scum terror cd {aids needle rec.}
seraphim slaughter have chosen the right name for this release!! totalscummy,dirty 80's style thrash/punk rock with more modern touches of cold black metal.the band breaks down the intensity a few times to catch their breath and give the listener a small break with more mid-paced metal sounds.but swiftly kicks it back into high gear and unleashes their fury on the unexpecting listeners. this is a very energetic thrashing/black metal band that refuses to follow any trends or be put into one specific genre.serpaphim slaughter are a good band to check out if your sick of all the "atmospheric" bands that seem to be taking over the scene as of late.

BLACK SILENCE MALIGNANT Interview

Black Silence Malignant

Weslaco, TX

The Rio Grande Valley has been known for it's cultural history. Rich in every aspect. But in the lower South area of the Valley, a darker side rises from the earth. A metal scene which has been around since the late 90's till 2003, has just been recognized yet again. As we ask a few questions for a South Texas Black Metal band located in Weslaco, TX, 4.1 miles from the Mexican border, we listen in to what they have to think of the present Death metal and Black metal bands we have to offer to all the fans in the Rio Grande Valley...South Texas.

http://www. mysapace. com/severed_one666

Q. When did you first come into the scene? Why Black metal?

SHADE: Musically Black Silence Malignant (BSM) has been around since 2002! Nomiis created BSM out of his deranged imagination and love of horror movies.
It was received quite well amongst those lucky to have heard it! Often people yell out for us to play some of them songs but who knows.....!

Q. Introduction?

SHADE: BSM as a live unit introduced itself to the scene in Harlingen,TX, In the legendary Smileys Ball Room, on Feb 9 2008. Ever since then we have played throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Black metal is the most extreme way for us to paint our energies, so we indulge greatly!

Q.How long have you been together as a band? Any disagreements amongst you?

SHADE: The band as it is today has been around for about a year and a half! Many Drunken Nights of Rapture!!
Disagreements?? Haha none major, just stuff like who is rolling the joint or who is the designated driver for the night!
Every band has arguments but we have the band before our pride so it makes things more comfortable.

Q. How do you feel about the Hardcore scene in the Valley which pushed the Metal scene out?

SHADE: I don't think much of it! It sounds all the same, monotone vox, the riffs sound if as they are being recycled from band to band.
Every song is a break down haha! It is horrible, we all in the band went to the REAL METAL SHOWS out in Trenton Point and at Smileys where we saw bands like Scarabus, Belligerency, Axe of Vengeance, Of Forsaken Divinity, Satan Sluts. There were so many great bands during that era
that it is a shame that it has become water downed.

Q. Does the Valley have a strong point when it come to Metal?

SHADE: The fans!! I think there is gonna be an uprising of good metal bands coming out!!
We have already seen many other black metal bands popping out of no where.
It's not just black metal too I am finding industrial metal bands, death metal bands, and some great grind core bands
which is fucking great! It gives the fans something new and different to hear and the fans are growing and growing!

Q.When did you develop your music, what did you draw upon for inspiration?

Nomiis: The ideas came around 2002 and sound around 2004. It was based on old horror films, and sick minds it was just meant to make you fall hopeless and sick like you were in a downward spiral as we all have been! It was going well but the direction got lost and it was time to take it a step forward and make it a live band with a different attitude and thats where we have come! We now work together in all we do and use our creative minds to create this force.

SHADE: Inspirations comes from our energies!!

Q. What are your goals for South Texas Black Metal?

SHADE: To promote and establish an artistic movement of Black Metal in South Texas.
South Texas is home to many black metal bands!! Some known and others hidden!
We also have began to make friends with our brothers in Mexico so Perhaps build an international alliance..

Q. Do you see yourselves declining in the near future?

SHADE: Our will drives this band towards progress, we are currently writing new songs for our debut album!
Which so happens to be a concept album! So expect our fires to Grow and Burn greater than ever!!

Q. What would you list as some musical influences?

SHADE: Ulver, Aboyrm,Virgin Black, Woods of Ypres, Diabolical Masquerade,

Nomiis: As of right now Craft, Dissection, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Destroyer666, DarkThrone, Death Spell Omega,

Bane Morte: Xasthur, Twilight, Arcturus, Limbonic Art, Bathory, Carpathian Forest, Nattefrost

KRAUSK; Mercyful Fate,and King Diamond, Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, Nattefrost, Pantera, old school Slayer and pretty much any old school thrash metal.

Q. Where do you see your band in two or three years from now?

Nomiis: We hope our music will develop as the years progress and for the Ideology behind the band! We will still be playing for the underground just on a worldwide basis I would like to reach Europe they have a good scene, and release some good albums for your pleasure!

Shade: Constantly Recording and Touring!

Q. If you can create a tour with you band and others, what bands would that tour consist of?

Nomiis: If we had a privledge to set up a tour we would definitely pick Destroyer 666, Cermonial Castings, Aborym, Belphegor, Black Silence Malignant, Heaven Holocaust(another good South Texas Band we would tour with!)

Q. Looking back at the history of black metal, what new element do you wish to bring to the genre? What aspects would you wish your band to exclude?

Nomiis: We would like to keep as close to the traditional sound of black metal! We all incorporate our own sound that totally gives it a different attitude we would like to add alot more classical, folk, sounding acoustics and clean parts in the vein of Dissection but that's about it! We would be excluding catchy riffs and trendy noise we keep it raw and pure!

Shade: We also think we have the capacity to maybe go along some Dark Insutrial elements much like Aboyrm. *WT/Necro*

Abigail Williams "In the Shadow of a thousand sun"

Reviewed by Lori

Abigail Williams hails from the US and judging by all thousands of their friends on myspace they are a very popular band. I see why they are popular though, the same reason Dimmu Borgir, Old man's child, COF is popular with a lot of people in the black metal scene, the production is very good., jaw dropping good. It is better than the previous bands I mentioned.

There is actually nothing wrong with the music on this CD, very symphonic, killer piano, talented fast drumming, vocal style are the black metal screams and at times some gutturals. On a couple trax there are some male clean vocals that are nice.

What stands out to me the most is the piano. The piano brings a soft mystical side to the music along with power and strength . On song 10 you hear a beautiful violin with the piano creating a sombre atmosphere to end the CD.

Black metal fans that stick with the thick raw cold black metal bands like Dark Throne, Burzum, Manes, old Dimmu borgir, etc and shun bands that plays black metal with a more cleaner sound, I really think you should check this band out because you will be missing out on some great music if you dont.

This 6 member band created songs that will not disappoint in any way. My only problem is the CD was not long enough.
candlelight records.

alghazanth-wreath of the vetat cd {woodcut rec.}
another amazing and majestic black metal entity from the finnish underground.the band takes little time in unleashing their blaspemous and intense sound from the first crushing blast beat. then goat tormenter are drawn into the mix and what a vocalist!! think legion {marduk} with a slight deeper shriek/scream.the band also amazed me with how they incorporated keyboards into the dark/war metal sound. but it actually "adds" a nice dark atmosphere to the music without ruining the intensity. fans of mid era marduk {opus nocturne,heaven shall burn} and emperor {nightshade eclipse era} but also add a class of musicanship all their own. get this!!!

Anticosm "Alcoholic Darkness"

Reviewed by Lori

When I got this demo the case was in pieces and the booklet with the corpse paint band photos I did not have much faith in this band. I do judge a book by its cover... I popped the CD in and was extremely surprised, hey this is pretty good!

Anticosm is a 5 piece black thrash metal band from New Jersey that started in 05. The two main members enjoy almost all metal styles and have no problem involving them in their music. "Alcoholic Darkness" is a black thrash band with some death style vocals at times.

I am really liking the first song "Skinless". Near the end with the guitars wailing, drums pounding you hear raspy screams mixed with the deep vocals and then carries on with out the music and flows onto the second trax smoothly with heavy guitars more guttural. Each song has something different going on, this is not boring. Acoustic guitar and keyboard is used on the song Black Hearts and just shows how versatile this band can be.

When they put out a CD I hope to see you all buy it and support this band. I sure will.

Dignity "project destiny"

Reviewed by Lori

Wow, the very beginning of this CD is very orgasmic, powerful, makes you want to conquer the world with the power metal style choir vocals. It makes you think this CD is going to be killer, but then once that is done its like the band was pussy whipped into lame ass crap. All that on the first song....

The style of music is "melodic hard rock". If I want that crap I would watch headbanger's ball.

"If you are a fan of Europe and TNT" than you might like this crap. Sweden has raised some amazing, talented bands, but even the great will fall....and they surely did with this band.

The music is rocky, sometimes heavyish and the vocals....anyone know the band Flowing Tears? Well many times he sounds like her.

I do not recommend this band, but you should take a listen and decide for yourself

singapore's impiety return!! and unleash their most extreme,intense
masterpiece of hate-filled war/black/thrash metal.5 tracks {4 originals,1 sarcofago cover} if you have heard any of this bands previous work then you know what to expect.if you are new to this band and their sound.mix {early} venom,slayer,sarcofago with the more of the blacker souls like blasphemy,bestial warlust etc..and it will give you some idea of this bands intense sound.

Katra "Beast Within"

Reviewed by Lori

Katra is yet another Gothic metal band with female vocals in a almost over flowing scene of Gothic metal bands with female vocals. This genera can be nice, but all the bands kinda blend together after awhile;all sound the same.

If bands like Epica, Theater of tragedy, nightwish and all other bands like this is your thing than you will love this band.

Vocalist Katra Solopuro aligned with several musicians back in 2006. Katra stands for longing, love, passion set to music.

Here is how the label describes the band "....Gothic metal with folk influences that ranges from catchy hits to sensual ballads accentuated by a very powerful production."

The music is nice and calming, no aggression here. Vocals are strong and at times very gentle, she can be versatile it seems.

When this CD is on sale I recommend buying it.

my shameful-descend cd {firebox records}
dark,dreary and just plain depressing doom!!is what my shameful
deliever to you the unexpecting listener on this release.starting off
with an early 90's death/doom vibe {anathema,my dying bride} within the waves of depressing atmosphere the band also has some eerie,black metal guitar chords.the vocals go from sorrowful death growls to a more traditional clean voice.no keyboards,no female vocals,nothing but cold desolate doom is what my shameful release on this desolate,dark masterpiece.

netherbird--the ghost collector cd {pulverised records}
ahh yes black/death no one does it quite like {or better than} the swedish underground.this is defintly one of the heavier,darker bands to come from sweden {that i have heard} in quite sometime.a nice blend of {older} morbid angel,meets at the gates!! the band keeps the mood with the addition of some acoustic guitars,female.male choir type vocals. a very entertaining band to say the least. i for one see this band being a big name within the scene.if you are a fan of straight forward black/death metal with some melodic overtones check this band out today!

Serenity "Fallen Sanctuary"

Review done by Lori

Serenity was formed in 2001. They play symphonic, melodic metal with a touch of progressive. I am listening to the CD now and I think this band will please those who are into power, progressive, heavy metal and melodic metal bands like Dark Tranquility. This band is not bad at all. The guitarists sound like they know what they are doing and the vocals are really good, dude can sing well. The chorus makes you want to sing along. Like all or most power or melodic bands (awesome!!! voice over,got to love that...or not) there are ballads and this album has its share of ballads, very lovely.

I recommend this CD
